MEMOIR LANE: Where to Start Digging

In this issue...

Letter from the Editor

Dear Fellow Memoirists,

So many things going on, my head is spinning. This month’s issue is chock full of goodies, so let’s get right to it…

Thank you to everyone who took the time to fill out our survey! I value your input and hope to meet more of your specific needs. If you haven’t had the chance to complete the survey yet, it takes less than five minutes…you can do it now!

Are you having trouble getting started with your Memoir? Would you like to have someone tell you what to do next? How about a little help with getting organized? This month we’re launching the beginnings of the Memoirs By: Me Album, a “Create Your Own” Memoir Book.

Please be encouraged, writing your memoirs is an achievable task; you just need to take it one step at a time. We’ve put together a syllabus to accomplish your memoir-writing project, chapter by chapter. This month our focus will be on Your Family Tree. I’ve included a blurb from Genealogy 101: Where to Start Digging below.

Plus, are you aware of the different publishing options available to you? Sarah Cypher from the Three Penny Editor shares some articles she wrote on the differences between them as well as offers tips on self-publishing.

We’ve uncovered more resources pertaining to genealogy for those interested in going down that road, and finally, an excerpt from our latest featured memoir, I was Touched by an Angel by Douglas R. Johnson. This is especially poignant to me because my father wrote it.

See, I told you there are lots of goodies here. So join me now in a quick Scroll Down Memoir Lane…

Remember, you may unsubscribe to this publication at any time and still continue your membership to our site and forum. To unsubscribe, follow the instructions at the bottom of the page.

NEW! Memoirs By: Me Album

The Memoirs By: Me Album gives you a layout for your memoir and eliminates the question of how do I get started? Following this format will help you, step by step, complete your project. Regardless of the method you choose to tell your life story, whether it is through journaling, scrapbooking or publishing a book, this will prove to be very helpful. You will finally have direction on where to go from here.

NEW! Family Tree Chapter Syllabus

This month we’re focusing on completing a segment for your memoir-writing project on your Family Tree. Whether you’re just keeping a personal journal, putting together a scrapbook, or writing a full-blown Memoir, your Family Tree MUST be addressed. Your descendants will greatly appreciate it! Even if you don’t have any children of your own, I’m sure you have nieces or nephews, or there may be in the future…this family history is worth preserving!

We put together a Syllabus of Objectives and Assignments. These are just suggested assignments; tailor them to suit your personal desire. But please, do SOMEthing to record your Family Tree and honor a few members who have left an imprint on your life. You will feel great fulfillment for doing so.

Where to Start Digging?

Genealogy is defined as the study or investigation of ancestry and family histories. So, more or less it’s detective work. Or I guess you could call it excavation. Either way it's like hunting for treasure.

Now, wouldn’t you consider discoveries from your lineage a treasure? Suppose you found out your great-great-great-great-great grandfather (there might be one or two more generations there) was Patrick Henry like I did twenty years ago…you know, the one who said, Give me liberty or give me death! How cool is that! Perhaps an ancestor of yours sailed on the Titanic, fought in the French Revolution or discovered penicillin? Tell me you wouldn’t find that fascinating!

But with all the information available on the subject, it can seem very overwhelming. So the question is, Where do you start?

The answer: You!

Using small bits of information from your memory is a great starting point for your excavation. Then round up documents and other articles that might give you more clues, like a family Bible or a personal address book (giving birth and anniversary dates).

Then of course, contacting family members (immediate and extended) for more information could certainly help fill in some blanks. And taking a few field trips, like to a gravesite, could contribute even more clues (birth and death dates).

Constructing a family tree is an EASY introduction to genealogy and a must-have for your memoir. Plus, you may find digging deeper rather intriguing.

Resources Available to You

Rooting Out Your AnceStory: A Primer for Beginning Genealogy by: Vikki L. Jeanne Cleveland
I purchased this ebook myself, and found it very helpful. With detailed instructions on what you’ll need to get organized to bountiful resources of where to look for more information, Vikki gives advice and guidance from her own personal experience. It is obvious this is a passion of hers and reading about it, I found her passion quite contagious. Read a sample from the book.

Online Genealogy Courses
Suite University offers a few online courses on genealogy. These can be taken as independent study, allowing you the flexibility to work at your own pace. Genealogy for Beginners walks the beginner through basic genealogy and deals specifically with making family trees. Whereas Genealogy: Researching Immigrant Ancestors is more suitable for those who are ready to try to do in-depth research.
