Memoir-Writing Tips

Some tips on writing about traumatic events...

  1. Try distancing yourself from the situation by writing as if it was about someone you knew, rather than yourself. For example, There was a lady I knew who had a troubled relationship with her spouse...
  2. Imagine you are talking to someone who is in the same situation now that you were once in and give him/her advice. For example, I know how you feel, I felt the same way. When this happened to me, I... If you can focus on helping someone else with his or her experience you may be able to relay yours better.
  3. Understand, your journals don't judge you. The best part of keeping a journal I found growing up is my journal was my best friend. She accepted me with all of my shortcomings. She was always there when I needed her. She never judged me. I could tell her ANYthing...and you can, too.
